The Towerlight, Towson’s college paper, doesn’t run an issue during Spring Break. That’s why I decided to revisit my old friends Marco and Stormi. It feels strange to say “revisit,” since this site was originally meant to showcase their misadventures. Since the publication of Less Than Three, I’ve shifted my focus away from my Warcraft origins and leaned more towards quote-end-quote real life.
This disappoints me for two reasons. First off, I have about forty or so comics sketched out that deal with World of Warcraft. I drew them almost a year ago, figuring that I’d need a large body of work to fill out the vast emptiness that was to be my webcomic. It would be a real shame to let them go to waste. Looking back, I can still get a chuckle, which is a good sign. Usually, I hate my work in retrospect. It’s like looking at old photographs of yourself and mocking the clothes you once considered the epitome of fashion. “God, I can’t believe I thought that was cool!” Now replace the word “cool” with the word “funny” and you’ve got the general idea.
The second reason has to deal with the nostalgia factor associated with said comics. Each of them is linked with some event that happened in-game amongst me and my friends. As you laugh at those old pictures of yourself, memories come flooding back about the people and places in the background. Conversations you had and jokes you heard start bubbling to the surface and you just start smiling.
I’ve been told by several people that there is a clear distinction between friends in the real world and those online. To be honest, I can’t agree with them on all points. It’s very true that superficial relationships are the norm in such an impersonal environment. But I can’t help but feel a certain connection with my virtual brethren. In the society we live in, we can see hundreds of people per day, yet speak less than ten words to any of them. We constantly seek out people who have similar interests, but when we find them online it comes with the stigma of the cyber-geek loner.
Wow, seem to have gone off on a bit of a tangent again. The main point is that it’s good to go back to my roots every now and then. Next week will see the return of Less Than Three. Maybe one day I’ll be able to update more than once a week. Then there just might be time for both comics. Best of both worlds, no?
