Windsock

Flu-germs … defeated … many casualties … what price, freedom!

One of the benefits to being a cartoonist is being able to live out your childhood dreams through proxy. In this case, it was being a part of the Mystery Science Theater 3000 cast. I can still remember tuning in on Sunday mornings to the Sci-Fi channel and laughing so hard a Cheerio would lodge in my nose. And to couple this cameo with The Watchmen? Pure geek bliss.

Speaking of the movie, I thoroughly enjoyed it as a companion piece to the novel as well as a stand alone film. I know, I know, I decided to focus on the most immature aspect I could possibly drudge up. But seriously, they showcased Dr. Manhattan’s junk to the point of absurdity. The ambient sounds of the theater started with the expected giggling at first sight, which descended into an acclimated silence by the fifth outing, but erupted into angry groans by the fourteenth time they waggled his digital dong in our collective faces.

As a literary tool (*giggle*) it serves the purpose of highlighting Osterman’s detachment from humanity. But when it breaks the audience’s ability to suspend their disbelief, you have jolted them right out of the moment and alienated a character. Also, I’m sure it took a lot of money to animate. I hope there’s a few kids out there who realize their college education is riding on the back of that thing.
